REVIEW: Nikkor 24mm f2.8 pre-AI
By Daniel Nielsen

I used this solid, metal-bodied lens for nearly 20 years, and it always did everything I asked of it. I have nothing but praise for its optics and its mechanical construction.
Before I bought the 24mm, I had used a 28mm, and it never seemed wide enough. The switch to 24mm made all the difference. For me, it seemed the perfect focal length for all my wide-angle shots.
I've read elsewhere that later versions - both AI and autofocus - are even sharper than the model I owned. Yeah, that's possible, but the old beast I used year after year never disappointed me. It turned out shot after shot of perfectly acceptable slides and prints, everything from sweeping landscapes to near-macro detail shots.
I sold it after buying and using a Nikkor 20mm for a couple of years. At this stage in my career, I found the 20mm helped me capture the extreme-wide images I now desire. But I now find it necessary to also use a 35mm lens on occasion, when the 20mm is just too wide. The 24mm could function as my sole wide-angle lens. Now, I need to carry two lenses much of the time.
